PAC/SPA Archaeological Training Program

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Pennsylvania Archaeological Council (PAC) and the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology (SPA) are launching a new public archaeology training initiative in 2026.
This week-long immersive field school invites citizen scientists, students, and lifelong learners to participate directly in ongoing archaeological research while learning excavation techniques, artifact identification, documentation methods, and professional ethics from experienced archaeologists
The goals of the program are:
- To educate SPA members in archaeological techniques, procedures, and ethics
- To promote responsible public engagement in the scientific investigation and preservation of Pennsylvania’s past
2026 FIELD SCHOOL DETAILS
DATES
May 17–23, 2026
LOCATIONS
Fort Halifax (18th-century frontier fort)
Shoop Site (Ice Age-era Indigenous site, ca. 12,800 years old)
Participants rotate between both sites to gain experience in historic and precontact archaeology
SKILLS PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN
Participants will receive training in:
- Basic excavation and shovel testing
- Screening and soil processing
- Artifact identification (historic and precontact materials)
- Mapping and documentation
- Archaeological ethics and stewardship
PROGRAM COST & HOUSING
Program fee: $150 upon acceptance
Includes: 7 lunches, opening cookout, dig kit (refundable deposit), T-shirt, certificate
Housing options include:
- Camp Hebron bunkhouse ($45/week)
- Camp Hebron tent camping option ($20.45/week)
- Halifax Inn block rate – reserved through April 1 ($106.72/night)
WHO CAN APPLY
Applicants must:
- Be 18+
- Be capable of physical excavation work
- Be current SPA members (2026)
- Agree to SPA and SAA ethics principles
- Sign liability waiver upon acceptance
