February 2026-
The Pennsylvania Archaeological Council (PAC) and the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology (SPA) are excited to announce the launch of the 2026 PAC/SPA Pennsylvania Archaeological Training Program.
This new public archaeology initiative offers a week-long, hands-on field school taking place May 17–23, 2026 at two significant Dauphin County sites: Fort Halifax and the Shoop Paleoindian Site.
Participants will rotate between both locations and receive supervised training in excavation, screening, artifact identification, mapping, documentation, and archaeological ethics. The program is designed to bring avocational and professional archaeologists together in support of education, stewardship, and scientific research.
In addition to field school participants, PAC and SPA are also seeking qualified Field Assistants to help support instruction, excavation supervision, and field laboratory procedures. Field Assistants should plan to arrive May 16 for staff orientation and will receive a $35/day stipend, lunches, and housing options
Applications for both Field School Participants and Field Assistants are now open.
